Dormaa-Ahenkro (Bono Region), March 12, GNA – The National Tenants Union of Ghana has commended the Rent Control Department for intensifying enforcement of the Rent Act to help sanitise the country’s rent administration system.

Mr Reindolph Afrifa-Oware, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs of the Union, said the strict enforcement of the Act was crucial for promoting transparency and addressing disputes in the rental sector.

His commendation followed a new directive by the Rent Control Department instructing all landlords to issue Rent Cards to their tenants, as required under Section 20 of the Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220), and Section 5 of PNDC Law 138 of 1986.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Dormaa-Ahenkro, Mr Afrifa-Oware said the directive was timely and lawful, adding that proper implementation of the Rent Act would enhance accountability and protect tenants from unfair practices.

He emphasised that the Union remained committed to supporting the Rent Control Department to ensure full compliance with the law for fairness and efficiency in rent administration nationwide.

As part of ongoing reforms to strengthen transparency and compliance, the Rent Control Department has directed all landlords to issue official Rent Cards to tenants beginning April 1, 2026.

According to the department landlords who failed to comply with the directive would be prosecuted accordingly.
