Sekondi, March 26, GNA – The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has procured 10 tricycles and 10 refuse containers to help in effective waste collection and disposal.

The Assembly would no longer struggle with its waste management in line with the smart city agenda.

Mr. Fredrick Faustinus Faidoo ESQ, the Chief Executive Officer of the STMA, indicated that currently, five refuse containers with five tricycles had been received out of the 20 planned.

He mentioned that the waste management officers within the three sub metropolitan councils would be trained on the usage of the tricycles to effectively monitor its usage to ensure its optimum benefits.

Mr. Edmund Bonsu, the Director of Waste Management at the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, said the Assembly’s partner in Waste Management provided the facilities to assist in managing waste in the metropolis.

He pointed out that the provision of the equipment would boost waste collection, help to handle spill-over at the sites, evacuate decade old refuse, as well as provide areas in need of the containers to ensure good sanitary environs within the Metropolis.

The tricycles would help improve street sweeping.

He revealed that, a new landfill company, Waste Landfills would resume operations on the Assembly’s engineered landfill site to do remedial works, cater for indiscriminate dumping and its complete management.

Mr. Bonsu noted that the department would begin education on circular economy which involved reuse, recycling and source separation.

He called on residents to help the STMA in ensuring a clean environment.
