Police arrest 12, three linked to Asawase chief’s murder

Accra, March 20, GNA – The Ashanti North Police Command has arrested 12 robbery suspects in intelligence‑led operations targeting robbery networks across the Region. 

Police said three of the suspects had been directly linked to the murder of the Kusasi Chief of Asawase in Kumasi. 

A press brief named the suspects as Abdalah Alhassan, Jemini Usman alias Babamu, Aminu Iddrisu alias 0244, Illiasu Dauda, Majeed Issaka Jibril, Gafaru Ibrahim, Mohammed Mumuni alias Mama, Tanko Malik alias Bronze, Mohammed Bawa alias Mallam, Dramani Musah, Suleman Yasir Arafat alias Obasanjo, and Ashaidu Sumbieda alias Eyeshadow. 

Police linked Usman alias Babamu, Arafat alias Obasanjo and Sumbieda alias Eyeshadow to the murder of the Chief. A Toyota Corolla with registration number GC 439‑21, believed to have been used in the crime, was also retrieved. 

During the operations, two suspects -Illiasu Bawa and David Aheto – sustained gunshot injuries and were later pronounced dead. 

Police recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition, including two AK‑47 rifles, a pump‑action gun, two pistols and dozens of rounds of ammunition. 

One suspect, identified as Illiasu alias Abodam, is currently on the run, while police intensify efforts to arrest him. 

The Command said the operations formed part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on violent crime and restore public safety in the Region.
