Lambussie District Assembly commemorates 69th Independence Day with clean-up exercise

Lambussie (UW/R), March 7, GNA – The Lambussie District Assembly in the Upper West Region, has marked the 69th Independence Day celebration with a directive for residents and students to undertake a clean-up exercise, to rid the district of filth. 

The clean-up exercise, organised in six zones – Lambussie, Chebogo, Hamile, Karni, Samoa, and Piina was led by circuit supervisors, sanitation officers, and security personnel, in commemoration of the 69th Independence Day celebration. 

Addressing the gathering at Lambussie zone, Mr Ireneous Basingbie, Lambussie, the District Chief Executive (DCE), said the exercise was in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s directives for each district to choose an activity to commemorate the 69th Independence Day celebration. 

He urged the residents organise clean-up exercises within their immediate environs to contribute to the 2026 celebration and tasked sanitation service providers, to collect refuse gathered by households along streets and inner roads. 

Mr Basingbie emphasised the importance of patriotism saying, “As Ghana marks her 69th anniversary, it is a day to pay homage to our founding fathers and do an introspection, charting a good course that will imbibe patriotism in the youth.” 

He called on stakeholders and residents to undertake community clean-up exercise in their surroundings to keep a clean environment in the district. 

Mr Naa Peter, the Lambussie District Environmental Officers, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), after the clean-up exercise highlighted the district’s sanitation challenges and that the exercise was a step in the right direction to address issues of typhoid, cholera and other communicable diseases in the district. 

Mr Peter, said the district faced numerous sanitation challenges, and called on all residents in the district to participate in clean-up exercises to keep the surroundings of the environment clean and decent. 

“We are using the school children in this exercise in order to inculcate behavioural change to avoid indiscriminate throwing of rubbish to address the district’s sanitation issues,” he said,  

Kuoro Issaka Zengeh Kazie Tenjie II, the Paramount Chief of the Lambussie Traditional Council, commended the DCE and assembly staff for their efforts and commitment to the exercise and urged residents to celebrate the nation’s independence with pride and patriotism. 

He encouraged the citizenry to reflect on the sacrifices of the country’s forefathers and renew their full commitment to unity and peace for the development of the district and the nation.
