Tadzewu (V/R), March 13, GNA – Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), would serve as the Special Guest at an educational awards ceremony for the second cohort of beneficiaries, in the Ketu North Constituency, Volta Region.

The awards scheme, dubbed “The Ketu North Scholar,” is an initiative by Mr Edem Eric Agbana, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, focused on investing in young people’s education to secure a brighter future for the area and beyond.

Mr Agbana, in a statement, said Mr Dwumfour had fully bought into the vision behind the scholarship initiative, and he would be present in person to witness the awarding of scholarships to 400 students.

The students, who were selected after a meticulous screening and interview process, were expected to receive scholarships covering between 60 and 100 per cent of their academic fees, the statement said.

Mr Agbana further revealed that over GHC 1.3 million had been invested in the initiative, which commenced last year with the support of a few friends and some organisations.

“It has been demanding, rigorous, and expensive, but deeply fulfilling because it directly changes lives. I have personally set aside 50 percent of my salary to sustain this initiative. Even with that commitment, the need is still greater than the resources available,” he said.

Mr Agbana also explained that the initiative operated a transparent system, where donors were publicly acknowledged.

“This is why we continue to count on the support of individuals, friends, and organisations who believe, as I do, that investing in the education of our young people is the most powerful investment we can make in the future of Ketu North,” he said.

The second cohort received a total of 786 applications from across the constituencies, which were eventually reduced to 400 beneficiaries after a rigorous screening and interview process conducted by the Scholarship Committee, he said.

Beyond providing financial support for students, the project also aimed to reduce school dropout rates, promote equal access to quality education, and empower academically gifted but financially challenged students to achieve their full potential.

It also sought to encourage academic excellence, develop future leaders for the constituency, and create opportunities for mentorship and career guidance for young people.

The event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 22 at the Ketu North Municipal Assembly Hall in Dzodze.
