Finland backs Morocco’s autonomy plan as most feasible solution to Sahara issue

Accra, March 3, GNA –Finland has expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as the “most feasible solution” to the Sahara issue.

The position was announced following a meeting between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Elina Valtonen, who is on an official visit to the Kingdom.

In the communiqué, Finland reaffirmed its backing for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, considering it a serious and credible contribution to the UN-led political process and “a good basis” for achieving a lasting and mutually acceptable political settlement.

The two Ministers further welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025) and reiterated their support for ongoing efforts by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate a just, durable and mutually acceptable solution to the Sahara dispute.
