Accra, March 8, GNA – The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Ghana Chapter has called for stronger action to ensure that the rights of women and girls were protected and promoted across the country.
The call was made in a statement signed by Dr. Charity Binka, Chairperson of AWLN Ghana, on the celebration of the International Women’s Day, 2026 on the theme: “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls.”
Dr. Binka said the theme served as both a moment of reflection action, noting that although progress had been made in promoting gender equality, many women and girls continued to face barriers that denied them their fundamental rights.
“Rights must be protected, justice must be accessible, and action must be deliberate and sustained if we are to build a society where every woman and girl can thrive”.
Ghana had made significant strides toward gender equality, with the passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, and described it as a historic milestone in promoting women’s representation in leadership and decision-making.
However, she observed that legislation alone was not sufficient to guarantee meaningful changes, but effective implementation, public awareness, and institutional accountability were essential to ensure that these rights translate into real opportunities for women and girls across the country.
She urged stakeholders to strengthen access to justice for women and girls, including protection against gender-based violence and discrimination.
AWLN Ghana believes that increased investment in girls’ education, digital inclusion and economic empowerment to enable women to contribute fully to national development was critical.
Whiles calling for collective action from government, civil society, traditional authorities, the private sector and the media to challenge harmful social norms and promote gender equality, it served a reminder of the moment which demands Rights, justice and action.
