Tema, Feb. 13, GNA – Valentine’s Day on February 14 is increasingly being celebrated not only through private dinners and handwritten notes but also with a surge of curated posts, short-form videos, and digital gift exchanges shared across social media platforms.

From Instagram carousels and TikTok montages to WhatsApp status updates, the day has taken on a highly visible digital dimension. Expressions of affection that were once intimate are now displayed before online audiences, reflecting broader changes in how relationships are experienced and showcased.

Traditionally, the occasion was marked with tangible gestures such as bouquets of roses, greeting cards, and quiet evenings spent together. However, the growing influence of digital platforms has reshaped these rituals, placing greater emphasis on visual presentation and public engagement.

A random survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) sought to determine whether young people prefer celebrating Valentine’s Day on social media or through traditional outings.

Mr Phillip Anim, a public sector worker, said times have changed, and he would now prefer surprising his girlfriend via an online order rather than taking her out.

Mr Sammy Spio-Gabrah, an online trader, however, stated that he would rather take his girlfriend out, buy her a gift, and also share posts about her on social media.

Ms Oparebea Quist, a shop attendant, said she preferred receiving a surprise gift along with quality time spent at home instead of going out.

Ms Naadu Lartey, a national service personnel, noted that she would favour receiving a surprise monetary gift above other forms of presents.

Social media algorithms tend to amplify visually striking content, giving prominence to elaborate marriage proposals, surprise trips, and coordinated couple photoshoots. As a result, romantic expression is increasingly taking on a performative tone, where presentation and audience reactions play a central role.

In the weeks leading up to the Val’s day, platforms record a noticeable rise in themed content. Couples engage in trending challenges, share gift-unboxing videos, and recreate viral proposal concepts.

Technology has broadened the ways affection can be expressed. Instant messaging, voice notes, and video calls now allow couples to maintain close contact despite physical distance.

As social media continues to shape how people connect and express affection, Valentine’s Day is increasingly observed online through curated posts, digital gifts, and shared virtual moments—blurring the line between traditional romance and digital expression.
