Scrap dealer remanded over transformer robbery

Accra, Feb. 11, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court has remanded Razak Osman, 47, a scrap dealer, in connection with an alleged robbery at Yunzu Group of Companies on Graphic Road, Accra.

Osman, together with one Libya, Abdul Rahman, and ten others at large, allegedly held staff of the company hostage, seized their phones and dismantled four brand new transformers at gunpoint.

He has denied conspiring with the group to assault workers and steal transformers valued at US$30,700.

His counsel, Mr Imoro Issahaku Gengen, prayed for bail, arguing that Osman was not at the crime scene, was a family man, had sureties and was unwell.

Bail was refused as the claim of sickness was not supported by evidence, and the police required his assistance to arrest accomplices.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori-Appiah, told the Court presided over by Madam Basilia Adjei-Tawiah that the complainant, Mr Joseph Nana Kwabena Ntim Awua, is a field engineer residing at Teshie, while Osman is a scrap dealer at Agbogbloshie.

Chief Inspector Ofori-Appiah said on January 1, 2026, Osman and his accomplices, claiming to be National Security operatives, arrived at Yunzu Group of Companies’ warehouse at Graphic Road in a white pick-up vehicle.

He said they seized workers’ phones, including that of the security guard, subjected them to physical abuse, and removed three 1,000 KVA electricity distribution transformers and one 200 KVA transformer valued at US$30,700.

The transformers were loaded onto a Man Diesel truck and a crane truck and driven away.

The prosecution said Osman and his accomplices also handcuffed a Chinese national at the company and later abandoned him on the road.

On January 12, 2026, the complainant reported the incident to the Accra Regional CID.

The driver of the truck used was tracked and arrested.

He stated that Osman and his accomplices hired him to convey the transformers to a scrap yard at Avenor.

The driver led police to the yard where the transformers were offloaded, and the supervisor, Musah Ahmed, was arrested.

In his statement, Ahmed said Osman and others brought the transformers to the yard, dismantled them and moved the parts to an unknown location.

The prosecution said Osman admitted the offence during interrogation, stating that the copper and aluminium scraps were taken to Agbogbloshie for sale.

The case is still under investigation, and a manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the accomplices at large.
