EU to support Somalia with $74 nillion

Brussels, Feb 26, (dpa/GNA) – The European Union will make an additional €63 million ($74 million) available in aid to vulnerable communities in Somalia, hit by conflict, displacement, rising food prices and drought, the European Commission announced on Thursday.

“The EU funding will prioritise life-saving integrated health and nutrition services, including the treatment of severe/acute malnutrition, emergency cash assistance, water, sanitation, protection and emergency education,” the commission said in the statement.

Since 2017, the bloc has provided more than €750 million to the Somalia, it said.

The country has been severely impacted by climate change.

According to the commission, 6.5 million people – roughly one in three Somalis – are facing hunger, while about 1.85 million children under five are at risk of acute malnutrition.

The Islamist Al-Shabaab extremist militia has caused unrest across large parts of the country.
