Seven killed, dozens missing as landslide buries homes in Indonesia

Jakarta, Jan 24, (dpa/GNA) – A landslide triggered by heavy rain has struck a village in Indonesia, leaving several people dead and dozens missing, authorities said on Saturday.

The landslide hit a hamlet in the West Bandung district of West Java province late on Friday, following hours of intense rainfall and strong winds, village head Nur Awaludin Lubis said.

As of Saturday, seven people had been confirmed dead and 93 others were reported missing.

“Not all those listed as missing are necessarily buried. Some may have evacuated on their own,” Awaludin said.

Indonesia is highly prone to natural disasters, including floods and landslides, due to its mountainous terrain, tropical climate and prolonged rainy seasons.

Landslides occur frequently during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in densely populated areas where deforestation and land conversion have increased soil instability.
