Accra, Jan. 7, GNA- Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has called for sustained national support for the Bank of Ghana(BOG) to enable it to carry out its mandate professionally and independently, free from political pressures.
The Asantehene appealed to political actors across the divide to respect the independence of the Bank of Ghana and give its leadership the space and support to perform its professional duties.
Otumfuo was speaking during a visit to the Head Office of the Bank of Ghana (Bank Square) in Accra.
The Traditional Leader, together with his retinue, was guided by Dr Johnson Asiama and other Bank Officials to tour selected Offices and facilities at the Bank Square.
He said that the Central Bank belonged to all Ghanaians and should be protected from partisan attacks in the national interest.
He commended Dr Johnson Asiama, the Governor, and his two Deputies, the Management and Staff of the Bank for their dedication and expertise in improving the economy.
He congratulated the Governor on his rise through the ranks of the Bank, noting that the responsibilities at the apex of the institution were demanding and required discipline, competence, and resilience.
Asantehene admired the Bank’s new Head Office complex, describing it as a lasting national monument, urging staff to match the modern environment with higher performance and commitment to duty.
He said the Bank played a critical role in safeguarding the national currency and setting monetary conditions that support economic growth, job creation, and business expansion.
The Asantehene said following a difficult period, the stabilisation of the cedi on the foreign exchange market had brought some relief to the economy, but cautioned against complacency, stressing that the gains remained fragile.
He urged policymakers and citizens to focus on sustaining progress rather than celebrating prematurely, emphasising the need for discipline, patience, and long-term thinking.
Otumfuo called for a major push to stimulate domestic and private sector investment.
He said the time had come to move from rhetoric to concrete action that would grow industries and create wealth.
He challenged the Bank to help find ways to reduce high interest rates to levels that could stimulate business activity and support wealth creation.
Otumfuo encouraged the Bank to continue engaging the public in clear and accessible language to help citizens better understand its mandate and policies.
Dr Asiama said, “Ghana has long benefitted from your brand of leadership your pious, steady, and deeply anchored faith in wisdom.”
On moments of national tension, you have reminded us that authority is not exercised through noise or farce, but through balance, restraint, and moral clarity.
“That instinctive manner of stability has made your influence relevant not only in matters of chieftaincy and social cohesion, but also in the broader national conversation about development and discipline,” he added.
Dr Asiama said Otumfuo had repeatedly urged leaders to reduce waste, protect public resources, and focus on development that creates real opportunity for ordinary Ghanaians.
“Your leadership reminds us that stability, whether social or economic, is built patiently, protected deliberately, and sustained through collective responsibility,” he said.
