Accra, Jan. 22, GNA – Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritise unity over personal ambitions, underscoring the need for party unity after the January 31 primaries.

Speaking at the peace pact signing ceremony held in Accra on Thursday, ahead of the January 31, presidential primaries, Nana Akufo-Addo described the pact as a solemn covenant to promote fraternity and discipline within the party.

“The NPP is bigger than any individual,” he emphasised, cautioning that internal contests should not weaken the rank and file of the elephant family.

Nana Akufo-Addo reminded aspirants that their conduct would shape the moral tone of the NPP and the country, urging them to campaign with respect and decency.

He cautioned against loyalty to individuals over loyalty to the party, insisting that unity was a strategic necessity for electoral success.

Expressing confidence in the NPP’s future, the former President was of the firm belief that the NPP remained the best vehicle for Ghana’s development, provided members upheld discipline and unity.

The peace pact, he noted, was pivotal towards ensuring the NPP emerged stronger ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The signing of the pact is expected to reassure party members, delegates, and the wider public of the NPP’s dedication to unity and democratic principles. It signals the aspirants’ willingness to place party cohesion above personal ambition as they prepare for the January 31 contest.

The five aspirants who signed the pact were:  Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana and economist, credited with spearheading Ghana’s digitalisation agenda, Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central, businessman, and media entrepreneur.

The rest were Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Food and Agriculture, with a PhD in Information Systems and a military background in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education, PhD holder in Educational Policy, and advocate for STEM reforms and Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary, civil engineer, and long-serving party stalwart.

The peace pact marks a significant milestone in safeguarding the integrity of the primaries and ensuring that the NPP emerges stronger and united ahead of the 2028 general elections.
