Adweso (E/R), Dec. 11, GNA – MTN Ghana Foundation, in partnership with the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, has commemorated the 16 Days of Activism against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), with some students in Koforidua.
The 16 Days of Activism against SGBV is a global campaign commemorated annually from November –December and the theme for 2025 is: “ UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls”.
Addressing students of Trinity Presbyterian Model School, Adweso, Chief Inspector Monica Opoku Agyeman of DOVVSU, Koforidua, explained that, technology facilitated gender-based violence, referred to any act that was committed, assisted, or amplified by the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) or other digital tools, that results in or is likely to result in physical, sexual, psychological, or other infringements of rights and freedoms.
She said, “technology mediated more of our daily lives; it was also being weaponised to harm women and girls in new and alarming ways.”
She advised students to protect their personal information, understand the importance of online privacy, and use technology for positive contributions, such as learning, creating, and helping others.
Mr Robert Kuzoe, the Senior Manager of MTN Ghana Foundation, said the complex nature and wide-ranging consequences of online and technology-facilitated violence call for holistic, future-proof systemic prevention and response efforts.
He said MTN Ghana aimed to make the digital environment safer, and support initiatives that safeguard vulnerable groups.
At the sensitisation programme, the students participated in a debate competition on the motion: “This house believes teaching boys and girls the same things about online respect and digital safety will prevent violence.”
Mrs Vivian Obuobisa Darko Sackitey, the Headmistress of the Trinity Presbyterian Model School, Adweso, thanked MTN Ghana Foundation for the knowledge imparted to the students.
On behalf of MTN Ghana Foundation, Mr. Kuzoe, presented iPads (a brand of tablet computers) to the school to enhance digital learning.
