Islamic State hails Sydney terror attack, incites hits in Belgium

Cairo, Dec 18, (dpa/GNA) – Islamic State on Thursday purportedly praised a deadly terror attack on a Jewish festival in Sydney, but the terrorist militia stopped short of making a direct claim of responsibility.

On Sunday, two attackers opened fire on crowds celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, killing 15 people and injuring dozens. Most of the victims were Jewish.

One of the attackers was shot dead by security forces, while the other was injured and later charged with 15 counts of murder and 40 counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

In an online newsletter allegedly linked to the extremist organization, Islamic State hailed the Bondi Beach assault, calling it “Sydney pride,” and the assailants as a “unique duo,” hinting that they might be supporters of the hardline jihadist organization.

The Australian authorities assume that the two were influenced and motivated by Islamic State.

“Although Islamic State has not yet got the opportunity to engage in a [direct] showdown with the Jews, its soldiers, delegations and supporters have not stopped their attempts to strike against the Jews everywhere,” the Islamic State newsletter read.

“The Jews today are bleeding in the streets of Australia after the zealots answered the call and carried out the recommendations to target religious festivals and gatherings,” it added.

The militant group has also incited refugees in Belgium, to carry out attacks on Jews and Christians there during the holiday season.
