ENT nursing college to introduce oncology and nephrology programmes in its curriculum

     Abuakwa (Ash) Dec. 12, GNA – The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) nursing training college at Abuakwa in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality, will soon introduce oncology and nephrology courses in its academic programmes. 

Mrs Mercy Belins Beyuo, Principal of the College, who announced this, said the twi new programmes were undergoing accreditation process with the Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC) for them to be added in the curriculum of the school. 

She was speaking at a joint graduation and matriculation ceremony of the college at Abuakwa. 

A total of 133 students were admitted into the school, while 77 students who have completed their courses were presented with Bachelors’ degree in nursing certificates. 

The ceremony was held under the theme: “Collaborating in the training of ear, nose and throat Nurses in ensuring quality healthcare”. 

Mrs. Beyuo, said the college which was established by the Ministry of Health in 2002 aimed at providing specialized training to nurses to offer skilled support to ENT surgeons to ensure quality services to patients with ENT conditions. 

She said the school had so far trained 908 nurses working in various health facilities, adding that, currently the school had a students’ population of 227. 

She said the trainees were mostly nurses already working in hospitals (serving officers), who chose to undergo specialized training in ENT. 

So far, 210 of them had sat for the 2025 licensing examination organised by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana and were awaiting results. 

Mrs Beyuo said the school, which initially shared the same facility with the Nursing and Midwifery Training College at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), began full operations at its permanent campus at Abuakwa on September 30, 2025. 

She mentioned inadequate computers, lack of office furniture, logistics, a backup power plant for tuition during power outages, and a weak duty vehicle, as some of the challenges facing the school. 

She appealed to the government, philanthropists and donor organizations to come to support the school and rescue it from the challenges to promote quality teaching and learning. 

Mr. Wisdom Osei Boamah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE),  charged the graduates to aim high with their dreams and work with humility and dedication to serve their clients. 

Nana Appiah Brempong, Abuakwahene commended the Municipal Assembly, the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders for establishing the school in the area. 

He said the facility was promoting both academic and economic activities of the people, especially the youth in the area. 

He appealed to the authorities to help solve the challenges of the school for its future advancement.
