AFCON Day 5: Morocco, Mali share spoils; Egypt takes control of Group B

Tangier, Dec 27, GNA -  Following a Christmas Day break, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) resumed on Day five with some exciting lineups. 
 
Egypt 1-0 South Africa (Group B, Agadir) 

Egypt defeated South Africa 1-0 in a thrilling match that included a lot of VAR involvement.   
 
Mohamed Salah’s penalty in the 44th minute after a video review ruled Khuliso Mudau had fouled him inside the box. 
 
Mohamed Hany was sent off two minutes later for a second yellow card, leaving Egypt to defend with 10 men. 
 
South Africa dominated the second half but failed to score. Their best chance came in the 87th minute, when Yasser Ibrahim was penalised for handball, but after a seven-minute VAR check, the referee overturned the decision. 
 
Egypt lead Group B with six points, while South Africa remain second with three points. 
 
Angola 1–1 Zimbabwe (Group B, Marrakech) 
 
Angola and Zimbabwe shared the points in a 1-1 draw that left both sides needing wins in their final group games to stay in contention. 
 
Gelson Dala put Angola ahead before Knowledge Musona equalised in first-half stoppage time. Both teams now have one point each and face higher-ranked opponents next. 
 
Morocco 1–1 Mali (Group A, Rabat) 
  
Hosts Morocco were held to a 1-1 draw by Mali after both sides scored penalties in a tense Group A encounter. 
 
Brahim Diaz converted from the spot in first-half stoppage time after a handball, but Lassine Sinayoko equalised in the 64th minute following a foul inside the box. 
 
Despite the domination, the Atlas Lions couldn’t convert several chances as both sides shared the spoils. 
 
The result ends Morocco’s 11-match run without conceding. 
 
Zambia 0–0 Comoros (Group A, Casablanca) 
 
Zambia and Comoros played out a goalless draw in a keenly contested encounter, leaving the group wide open with all teams standing a chance of qualification.
