Sunyani, (Bono), Nov. 28, GNA – Some mourners in Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital, have expressed their respective condolences to the Rawlings family, as the nation pays its last respect to the late former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, whose funeral is being held today, November 28 in Accra.
The nation’s longest-serving first Lady has been laid in state for public view, as the nation holds a solemn state funeral at the Independence Square.
Mrs Agyeman-Rawlings was the first Lady from June 1979 to September 1979, and from December 1981 to January 2001, and died on Thursday October 23, 2025 at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.
She was 76 years old.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, the mourners said they were saddened about the demise of the late Agyeman-Rawlings.
Mrs Divina Owusu, a trader, described the late former first lady as “pathfinding figure” in the annals of the political history of the nation, saying: “In fact, she has left an indelible scar in our minds.”
She commended the government for giving her a befitting state burial, and urged the nation to honour her heroes and heroines before they passed on to glory.
Miss Gladys Pomaa, another mourner the GNA chanced on at the Sunyani Night Market enclave, described the death of the former first lady as painful and unforgettable, and asked Ghanaians in general and the Rawlings family, in particular to pick solace in God.
Meanwhile, during a visit around 0800 hours to ascertain how the National Democratic Congress party office in the Bono Region was mourning the late former first lady, the GNA found a very calm atmosphere with nobody seen at the party office.
Also, the brisk business activity that characterized the Sunyani Township, mostly on Fridays, was progressing steadily, with few of the traders wearing mourning cloths of either red or black.
Some of the traders told the GNA they were following the event at the Independence Square through their television and radio sets.
