Aflao (V/R), June 10, GNA – A former Assembly Member for the Viepe-Tokor Electoral Area in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, Mr Victor Ayaku, has raised concerns over the transparency of both the registration and distribution processes under the government’s “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” initiative in the Ketu South Municipality.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency following a press statement, Mr Ayaku said the programme, intended to support households through poultry production, must be implemented in a fair and open manner devoid of political influence.
He expressed worry that many residents who were willing to benefit from the initiative were unable to do so due to what he described as limited awareness about the registration process.
“I would have also registered for the initiative, but I did not even know when the registration started,” he said, stressing that the apparent lack of publicity may have excluded many eligible beneficiaries.
Mr Ayaku noted that the initiative, a GH¢245 million government intervention, was designed to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods, and should not be perceived as a reward system for party loyalists.
“Public funds meant to alleviate hardship must not be weaponized for political patronage,” he stated.
He alleged that reports from within the municipality suggested that the distribution of the birds may have favoured some individuals based on political affiliation rather than need.
The former Assembly Member has therefore called on the Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Director of Agriculture and other coordinators to provide clarity on key aspects of the exercise.
These include the approved distribution model, criteria for beneficiary selection, registration procedures, data capture processes, and the level of public sensitisation undertaken prior to the exercise.
He also questioned whether the allocation per beneficiary conformed to the national guidelines and called for transparency in the supervision of the distribution.
Mr Ayaku urged authorities to ensure equal access to the programme for all residents, regardless of political background, to maintain public trust and confidence.
He cautioned that failure to address the concerns raised could lead to further actions through lawful and democratic means to demand accountability.
The “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” initiative forms part of government’s broader strategy to promote poultry production, create employment and enhance food security across the country.
