Accra, Nov. 13, GNA – Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of six potential recruits in the November 12 stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.
“I convey to the bereaved families my deepest condolences and wish the potential recruits in hospital a speedy recovery from their injuries and the accompanying trauma suffered by all who were at the El-Wak Stadium, including their parents, guardians and loved ones.
“It is my hope that each day will bring you renewed strength. May the Lord be with us all at this difficult moment,” he said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
Mr Akufo-Addo said he returned from Angola to the devastating news of the tragic incident, which claimed six lives and left many others injured during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise in the Greater Accra Region.
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Acting Minister of Defence, told Parliament on Wednesday that the incident resulted in 34 casualties.
Providing a breakdown, he said six people died, while five remained in critical condition and were receiving intensive care.
Twelve others were classified as fairly critical and required close medical attention, while the remaining victims were in stable condition under observation.
