Accra, Nov.4, GNA – The National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values has called on the University of Ghana (UG) to review and amend as quickly as possible, its policy changes concerning gender that seeks to incorporate gender-neutral pronouns.

Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, the Chaiman, Governing Council of the Coalition, in a statement at a media engagement, said the new status of the University was announced by Professor Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare, Pro-Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, during the University’s launch of a new five-year strategic plan.

It said the announcement read: “One of the significant changes is our shift towards a gender-inclusive stance. The language has been updated to reflect more inclusive terms, moving away from solely ‘he’ or ‘she’ references.”

According to the statement by Prof. Awandare, the revision was in furtherance of the Vice Chancellor’s vision of making the university a vibrant and responsive governance and management system, and to align the university’s laws with current and emerging national and university-level policies and operational processes.

The Coalition, therefore, reminded the university of the country’s laws and regulations prohibiting the recognition of any gender identity outside of male and female.

“We urge you to consider the potential legal and social implications of implementing such a policy. It may lead to conflict with existing laws, potentially jeopardising the university’s reputation and operations,” Apostle Onyinah said.

He entreated the university to review and amend as quickly as possible, the recent policy changes, as the current provisions did not align with national regulations.

The Coalition also called on the university’s Vice Chancellor’s office to respond to the letter submitted to them in that regard.
