AbibiNsroma Foundation and allies demand end to gas projects

Accra, Nov. 17, GNA-AbibiNsroma Foundation, GCAP-Ghana and Africans Arising are demanding an end to gas projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The headline for the protect, “Don’t Gas the South” was launched today as thousands of people around the world took to the streets to forcefully make the demand.

The “Don’t Gas the South” campaign, launched by a coalition of organizations including Africans Rising, GCAP-Ghana, and AbibiNsroma Foundation, aims to stop the massive gas build-out in the Global South that is undermining global climate goals.

Protests were held in multiple cities and provinces across several countries, with rallyists calling out governments, financial institutions, and energy corporations for pushing the expansion of gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructures.

In Ghana, the AbibiNsroma Foundation formally petitioned the Embassies of Japan, Korea, Netherlands and the South Africa High Commissions.

It also held Community and School engagements and Engagement with fisher folks.

They also petitioned the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environment, saying that every new gas development exacerbates climate injustice and deepens the climate crisis.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global electricity consumption is forecast to surpass 29,000 terawatt-hours in 2026, with the Global South driving this surge.

However, the proposed expansion of fossil gas infrastructure is staggering, with 284 discovered gas fields and new gas extraction projects, 153 proposed LNG terminals, and 768 gas power plants in the announced or pre-construction stage.

The campaign demands that governments prioritize people over profit and transition to renewable energy.

“We’re not just fighting against gas projects; we’re fighting for a world that’s just and equitable,” said Mr Robert Amiteye, spokesperson for AbibiNsroma Foundation.

The protests coincide with the ongoing COP30 climate summit in Belém, Brazil where world leaders have gathered to discuss climate action.

The “Don’t Gas the South” campaign is calling on governments to stop the gas expansion and prioritize climate justice.

The AbibiNsroma Foundation, a non profit, non Government Organization, is dedicated to the promotion of sustainable Livelihoods, Education, Environmental, Ocean, Climate Change and agricultural issues based on knowledge of cultural, formal and non formal education for a better standard of human living.
