UG Day 2025: ‘Wear UG’ initiative strengthens alumni, university bonds- UG Vice-Chancellor

Accra, Oct. 20, GNA – Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ghana (UG) says the ‘Wear UG’ Day is strengthening the bond between the institution and its global alumni network.

She stated that the initiative, which had been instrumental in re-engaging alumni relations in Ghana and other part of the world.

Professor Amfo made these remarks at the 2025 Wear UG Day Celebration which was held at the university .

The 2025 edition featured new activities such as a staff fashion design competition, aimed at inspiring innovation and demonstrating how the UG fabric can be integrated with professional flair.

The event showcased the style and creativity of staff.

Contestants included Dr. Gladia Toledo Mayari Yabang, Ms. Diana Abena Addo-Mensah, Mr. Elisha Kyirem, and Ms. Saratu Salifu.

Mr. Baba Hamidu, Principal Library Assistant at the Biochemistry Department, was crowned the winner of the University of Ghana Fashion Competition.

Mr. Hamidu’s winning outfit, a “Modern Dagbon King” design by master smock craftsman Inuusah Issaka, reflected royalty and power.

His victory highlighted the diverse talents and passion for fashion within the university community.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasised that the day was not merely about clothing, but a conscious effort to cultivate and celebrate a shared identity as members of a global institution.

“When you wear UG, it goes beyond wearing ideological banners. You wear the history, values, and aspirations of our dear UGers,” she stated.

Professor Amfo noted the powerful unifying effect the ‘Wear UG’ Day has had since its inception in 2023.

She explained how the maiden edition brought together staff, students, and alumni in a vibrant celebration, with participation from the then President of the Republic and other distinguished alumni.

“Indeed, all over the world, people were wearing UG creating a memorable experience, including sharing photos in the attire,” she said.

Professor Amfo articulated the strategic importance of this visibility, stating that the initiative “created visibility for the UG brand and has alumni engagement and sparked renewed pride in being part of the University of Ghana family.”

She described the ‘Wear UG’ Day as a movement that affirmed shared values and strengthened the collective identity of the university community, both past and present.

The Vice-Chancellor challenged all members of the UG community to embody the legacy of the institution.

“It calls on us to embody the legacy of this institution in our conduct, our service, and our outlook,” she said.

She encouraged a balance between professionalism and creativity, positioning members as true ambassadors of the University.

Professor Amfo expressed her vision for the ‘Wear UG’ Day to be recognized not only on campus but across Ghana and beyond, reinforcing the University’s position as a cultural trendsetter.
