Kadjebi (O/R), Oct. 3, GNA – The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, has suspended its indefinite strike action which began on Thursday, September 19, 2025.
Mr Godwin SirLord Humado, the Kadjebi District Chairman of TEWU, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that the suspension took effect from Wednesday, October 1, 2025, with members expected to resume work on Thursday, October 2, 2025.
He said the industrial action, which involved non-teaching staff across the Ghana Education Service (GES), Public and Technical Universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, was in demand of the conclusion and signing of Conditions of Service for members.
The nearly two-week legal strike drew the attention of key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and the National Labour Commission.
Mr Humado said on Monday, September 29, 2025, TEWU leadership met with the FWSC and employer institutions in Accra, where constructive dialogue led to an agreement to work towards resolving the union’s concerns amicably.
He said the parties have scheduled a follow-up meeting for Tuesday, October 7, 2025, to continue negotiations and finalise the signing of the Conditions of Service.
“As a result of this positive engagement, TEWU has decided to suspend the indefinite strike action to allow room for continued discussions and implementation of the agreed terms,” Mr Humado stated.
He added that all TEWU members across the affected institutions were expected to resume work by Thursday, October 2, 2025.
Members who are currently away from their duty posts are required to report no later than Monday, October 6, 2025, he said.
He emphasized that the action was a suspension, not a complete call-off of the strike.
“We wish to reiterate that no TEWU member or non-teaching staff should suffer any form of victimisation for exercising their right to strike. TEWU leadership will firmly defend any member who faces unfair treatment from their employer, now or in the future,” he cautioned.
Mr Humado expressed appreciation to school heads and managements who supported the union’s action without intimidation or obstruction.
He also commended the resilience of TEWU members, the National Executive Council, Management Committee, Regional Officers and Councils, District and Local Executives, Women and Youth Structures, Association Executives within the Ghana Education Service, and Local Executives in Public and Technical Universities.
Special appreciation was extended to the union’s Monitoring and Task Force Teams, as well as the media for amplifying TEWU’s message and supporting the cause.
“Our collective action has made a difference. There is power in unity,” Mr Humado noted.
