Nkrankwanta, (Bono), Oct. 03, GNA-Mr Dominic Sarkodie, the Dormaa West District Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture says the district is set to receive 10,000 birds under the implementation of the government’s Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme.
President John Dramani Mahama launched the programme, expected to reduce Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported poultry, which costs the country over $300 million annually.
Under the programme, the government will procure three million birds for distribution nationwide to boost the poultry industry.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkrankwanta, Mr Sarkodie explained that two poultry farmers in the district had been selected to receive and keep 5,000-day-old chicks each for four weeks before they would distribute to the beneficiary farmers in the district.
Mr Sarkodie explained the government would provide the directorate with vaccines, feed and veterinary services for the upkeep of the birds, saying each of the beneficiary farmers would also receive incentives like feeds and cages too.
He said the farmers would receive between five to 10 birds each and urged the youth to capitalise on the implementation of the Nkoko Nkitinki programme.
They should also contact the directorate for advice and directions.
Mr Sarkodie lauded the implementation of the programme in the district, saying that it would boost the poultry sector and create more job opportunities for the people.
