Keta Central Assembly-member laments over deplorable community roads

Keta (VR), Oct. 16, GNA – Mr Gabriel Dzikunu, the Assembly Member of the Keta Central Electoral area in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, has expressed worry about the deplorable road network within the area.

The roads, which had remained in a poor state for decades, were affecting economic and tourism activities with business personnel, finding it difficult to transport their goods, with tourists deterred from visiting the area because of the challenge.

Mr Dzikunu, said that the area in question included the Lagoon View, Market Street, Library, Fort Street, Chapman, Evangelical Presbyterian Lane, Ghana Commercial Bank, Togbi James Ocloo, and Amegashie Afeku Roads respectively.

“We are in dire need of accessible road networks, as residents have been expressing their frustration and disappointment over the neglect of these roads which are crucial for the community’s economic survival,” he said.

He said that the poor condition of roads in Keta Central was a major concern for residents who were under mounting pressure and demanding action from the government and municipal assembly, to prevent further deterioration.

Mr Dzikunu said the concerned of the residents were valid, considering the importance of the roads to the local economy and tourism industries in the area and hoped that the government through the municipal assembly would take action to address the situation.

He said the Keta Central constituency was an important economic and tourism hub within the municipality, with major attractions places like the Keta Main Market, Keta Shopping Mall, historic Fort Prinzenstein and beautiful sandy beaches, which needed good road network for effective access.

Some residents the Ghana News Agency interacted with said they had called on the government and the Municipal Assembly to take immediate action to address the situation and threatened to mount pressure on the authorities if their demands were not addressed.

They suggested that the assembly should utilise the DRIP machines project initiated by the previous government, to address the bad road concerns to support the local economy and tourism industry.

Other information gathered by GNA indicated that the Keta Municipal Assembly would soon initiate plans to address the bad road networks within the municipality.

It was also gathered that in 2023, the government through the Keta Municipal Assembly started work on portions of the road around the Market, but the work had stalled, leaving residents disappointed and demanding answers from the authorities to bring the contractor back to work to complete the projects.
