Ankobra (W/R), Sept. 03, GNA – Mr. Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, has indicated a strong commitment to probe a 65-million-euro loan facility for the construction and rehabilitation of three bridges approved by Parliament in 2020.
The bridges are those on the Ankobra River at Sanwoma in the Ellembelle District, River Iture between Elmina and Cape-Coast in the Central Region, and the Dikpe Bridge, a new bridge over the Black Volta between Lawra and Dikpe.
Speaking to Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, Mr. Nelson said the Ankobra Bridge was constructed between 1983 and 1984 by Fermentation Construction Company.
However, the bridge had been exposed to the weather, becoming weak and outlived its usefulness.
The Western Regional Minister promised to liaise with the Structural Integrity department for a test run on the bridge for action to be taken.
Mr. Saaka Alhassan, the Ellembelle District Roads Engineer, told GNA that letters had been sent to the Ministry of Roads and Highways in Accra, but his office was yet to receive a concrete response on repairs or reconstruction of the bridge.
Mr. Joseph Agyekum, Ellembelle District Chief Executive (DCE), also told the GNA that the Assembly had taken note of the nature of the bridge, and would take steps for the government to work on it.
The bridge on the Ankobra River is one of the international routes that connects communities along the Western corridor road from Takoradi and Tarkwa to Elubo, Half-Assini, and other countries in the West African sub-region through to La Cote D’Ivoire.
