Opeikuma (C/R), Sept 20, GNA – TERIA Foundation, an NGO working to empower children, groups and organisations in Ghana, has launched an entrepreneurial initiative to nurture creatives and entrepreneurs in beads making across basic schools in Ghana.
The Beading in Schools project, which conforms with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) four and eight, will equip schoolchildren with the skills to make necklaces, earrings, key holders, coin purse, bags, tissue boxes among other marketable items made from beads.
The project was launched at the Take Glory School at Opeikuma no.3l, the first beneficiaries, and would soon run concurrently across many other schools.
Mr Walter Mawuli Gli, Founding Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, said having trained many churches and communities in beads making over the past three years, it had become imperative to equip schoolchildren with the same skills.
He said beading was a lucrative venture helping to create jobs in the tourism and arts sector.
“It is a way of improving livelihoods and when it is introduced in the schools, it can help the children to earn income to support their education,” he said.
Mr Walter underscored the ability of beading to build the cognitive ability of children, adding that it was a great way to discover disability in children at a young age.
“It will run as an extra curriculum activity and we have the intention to extend it to other regions, especially the Northern Region,” he said.
He entreated all schools to include skills in beading in their curricula and urged public support for the project to reach out to more schools.
