Washington, Sept, 27, (dpa/GNA) – Gunfire erupted at a US immigration facility in Texas on Wednesday morning, resulting in several casualties, law enforcement officials said.
The shooting took place outside a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Dallas.
Local police said two people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, while one victim died at the scene.
The suspect is deceased, police said. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on X that the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The motive remains unclear, as does the identity of the victims.
FBI chief Kash Patel, said one person was killed in the incident in the Texas city, and several people were injured.
Preliminary investigations indicate the shooter opened fire from a neighbouring building, police said. But the exact background to the shooting initially remained unclear.
Patel suggested, that it could have been a politically motivated act against the work of the immigration authorities.
On X, he published a picture of bullet casings that read “ANTI ICE.” Patel said officials from the authority were not injured in the incident. There had already been an attack on another ICE detention centre for migrants in Texas in July, he added.
Vice President JD Vance posted condolences on X: “I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”
“It Has To Stop,” the Republican senator from Texas, Ted Cruz, said.
The incident comes at a turbulent time in the United States. Ramped-up ICE raids on supposed migrants as a result of US President Donald Trump’s stricter migration and deportation policy have triggered protests in many places.
