Accra, Sept. 8, GNA – The Association of China-Ghana Mining (ACGM) has donated GHS20,000 towards the medical expenses of Ms Rosemary Wayo, a Chief Reporter with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), who survived a tragic road accident last year.
The donation follows an appeal from the Agency to the Association to assist the award-winning reporter to undergo specialised treatment.
Ms Wayo’s life changed on September 21, 2024, when she was involved in a motor accident near Suhum in the Eastern Region.
The accident occurred a week after she won the Ghana Journalists Association’s Northern Regional awards for Best Reporter in Road Safety; and Peace and Conflict Sensitive Reporting.
She was travelling from Tamale to Accra for a professional training programme when the bus she boarded collided with a fuel tanker. The crash claimed eight lives on the spot and left Ms Wayo critically injured.
Ms Wayo spent a week unconscious in hospital and later underwent spine surgery at the University of Ghana Medical Centre.
She is currently recovering from lower body paralysis, relying on physiotherapy and medications, while enduring constant severe pain.
Mr Sean Zhang, Deputy Secretary General of the Association, who made the presentation on behalf of its Chairman, Tang ZhenJiang and Secretary General, Mr Kevin Chen, conveyed their empathy to Ms Wayo.
He said the Association’s goal was to support young individuals who deployed their talents for the common good of society by helping them to reach their full potential.
This would enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.
He assured that through its corporate social responsibility, ACGM would, therefore, support Ms Wayo’s recovery to enable her to return to active and productive life.
Mr Tang later told the GNA that it was unfortunate that a young woman with so much promise would find herself in such a predicament.
He said the Association would continue to demonstrate support for her courage, resilience and dedication, and to such others who may face similar situations.
He expressed the hope that all stakeholders of the Association would come on board to pursue such humanitarian causes.
Mr Tang emphasised that it was important for individuals and corporations alike to lend support to noble humanitarian causes to the world a better place.
Mrs Beatrice Asamani Savage, Director of Editorial of the GNA, received the donation on behalf of Ms Wayo.
She expressed gratitude to the Association, describing Ms Wayo “as an asset to the Agency for her diligence and dedication to telling the stories of the less privileged in society.”
She said the support was a great relief to both Ms Wayo and the GNA, explaining that it would help rebuild a precious life and motivate young journalists with the assurance that they would not be abandoned in times of affliction.
The ACGM brings together major Chinese mining companies and mining services companies in Ghana.
It was inaugurated in April 2025 to promote responsible mining, enhance industry cooperation and support investment.
The Association has committed to driving joint projects, integrating advanced technologies and promoting green mining practices.
Its aim is to balance economic growth, ecological protection and social equity for mutual prosperity.
