KpareKpare (O/R), Aug 4, GNA- Residents of Torlomadzi, a fishing community in the Krachi East Municipality of Ghana’s Oti Region, are living in fear due to the invasion of bloats of hippopotamus from the shores of River Nanum, a tributary of River Oti.
The hippos have been roaming around the village and shores for the past two weeks, causing significant damage to the livelihoods of residents.
A visit to the community by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed the extent of destruction with footprints of hippos found all-over the shores.
Madam Mary Dogbeda, a resident, who spoke to the GNA disclosed that they have been forced to go indoors as early as 1700 hours daily due to fear for their lives.
“Hippos have been storming our rice farms every day, putting our lives in danger,” she added.
Mr Godwin Agbeviako, another resident, echoed similar concerns, stating that the persistent presence of the animals in their farmlands and riverbanks had been causing significant damage to their livelihoods.
Many community members are growing increasingly concerned about their safety and the potential loss of their crops, which could have far-reaching consequences for the local economy, given the predominantly agricultural nature of the Krachi East Municipal area.
The community has called on the Game and Wildlife Officers at Nkwanta South to take urgent action to address the situation and prevent further damage to their crops.
The residents are seeking immediate assistance to mitigate the impact of the animals on their crops and ensure their safety and well-being.
However, the GNA has reached out to the Game and Wildlife Officers, who have assured of a swift action.
