Akatsi (VR), Aug 22, GNA- Mr Pascal Agbagba, the Volta Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has called for intensified efforts in educating the public on the need to resort to disaster prevention.
He said the need to ensure quality materials and proper construction in safer places must therefore be embraced by all.
Mr Agbagba made the call at Akatsi where over 50 rainstorm disaster victims from the area converged to receive some financial aid from Mr Bernard Ahiafor, the Member of Parliament for the area.
He said his outfit was focusing on prevention sensitization to mitigate the rising cases of disasters some of which were caused by people.
Mr Agbagba explained that relief support in emergency situations from the government could not be enough for any affected victim, “so we must focus on prevention management practices in order to avoid some of these disturbances.”
He also cited several instances where developers ignored the safety requirements such as building on waterways, the use of inferior products among others.
The call, according to some stakeholders, would go a long way to position the region on the path of growth, devoid of property destruction because of non-compliance.
Mr Ahiafor, who is also serving as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, made a cash donation of GHC100,000 to be distributed to 50 victims of rainstorm, and fire disasters that occurred in parts of his Constituency this year.
He said the gesture was received from Parliament, led by Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, and aimed at supporting his constituents who were hugely affected by the disaster.
