Obogu (Ash), July 29 – A heavy cloud of sorrow hung low over Obogu on Tuesday morning, a day after 17 young souls perished in a fatal accident on the outskirts of Juaso in the Asante-Akim South Municipality.
The tragic loss that befell the community continued to sink in when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the community.
The usually lively streets of Gyidim, a suburb predominantly inhabited by members of the Saviour Church, had fallen silent.
There was no chatter, no laughter, no signs of life as it used to, as tear-filled eyes, and the mournful wails of relatives filled the air.
The town had been brought to its knees by the sudden death of 17 of its youth, bright, spirited souls who had left for a church programme and never made it home.
At the entrance of the community, groups of mourners clad in red and black gathered in solemn clusters, their faces bearing the weight of the unspeakable tragedy.
Women sobbed uncontrollably, some sitting on bare ground with their heads bowed, while others wandered aimlessly through the community obviously searching for answers that would never come.
Men stood still, stunned and broken, occasionally wiping tears that betrayed their pain.
In front of the homes of the deceased, mourning canopies had been erected, where family and friends gathered to console one another.
In a town united by faith, the community of Obogu finds itself leaning heavily on that very faith to survive this tragedy.
And while the grief may linger for days, weeks, and even years to come, the names of the 17 will not be forgotten.
Their memories will live on in the stories, prayers, and tears of those they left behind.
