Palm wine tapper vanishes at Katafua, search underway

Dambai (O/R), July 17, GNA- A search operation is currently underway in Katafua, a farming community in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region, for a 46-year-old palm wine tapper, Mr. Agbovi Kofi, who went missing under mysterious circumstances. 

In an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Assembly Member for the area, Mr. Essoreke Pakaissi, revealed that the victim often spends some days at the village where he distilled wine and visited his family in Adumadum town.  

According to the Assembly Member, Mr. Agbovi Kofi returned to his family’s home on June 30, 2025, and left the next day on July 1, 2025, to his distilleries joint. 

The Assembly Member said people who usually buy palm wine from Mr. Agbovi, along with a nearby farmer, confirmed that they were with him at the joint from morning till midday.  

Mr. Pakaissi, told GNA that the farmer reportedly left Mr. Agbovi Kofi at 1500 hours, as he was preparing to go and heat the base of the tapped area with burning palm branches. 

The Assembly Member said the farmer’s wife sent food to Mr. Agbovi Kofi in the evening, but he was not found.  

The farmer himself went to the village at about 1915 hours and could not find Mr. Agbovi Kofi anywhere until the next day that the farmer returned home with the news of the victim’s disappearance. 

He noted it was the sixteenth day since he was las seen and there was still no trace of his whereabouts despite efforts by the community and authorities to find him. 

He said that an official complaint was made at the Tokuroano Police Station; however, the prolonged search has raised concerns among family and friends, who are growing increasingly anxious about Mr. Agbovi’s safety. 

Police Inspector Paul Amaglo at Tokuroano Police Station, confirmed that the Assembly Member for Adumadum Area, together with opinion leaders, have officially lodged a complaint about the missing person. 

He said the police have launched an investigation into the disappearance and are also working to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Mr. Agbovi’s disappearance.
