Accra, July 28, GNA – The Northern Development Forum (NDF) has expressed sorrow and concern at the dreadful escalation of violence in the Upper East Region, particularly in Bawku and Nalerigu in the Upper East and North East Regions respectively.
Confirmed reports have it that three students were fatally shot in two separate instances at Nalerigu Senior High School in the North East Region and Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region.
A statement signed by Major (rtd) Albert Don-Chebe, Chairman of NDF and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said “The NDF is urgently appealing for calm, and tolerance in the face of all adversities for an immediate end to all violence and hostility in the two regions. When students, our future, become victims of unrestrained violence, we must together, with the backing of all Ghanaians, assert that enough is enough! Please let the guns stay silent! Stop the killings!!”.
It said “With all the energies we have as a development forum representing the people of Northern Ghana, we appeal for the cessation of all forms of violence and implore all stakeholders, particularly Nayiri, the overlord of Mamprugu, and Zuraan, the overlord of Kusuag, to call for restraint among their respective communities while actively engaging in the pursuit of enduring peace, spearheaded by His Majesty, Otumfour Osei Tutu II”.
The NDF appealed to all sons and daughters of the five regions of the north and other well-meaning people to support all initiatives to bring the distressing fratricide to a quick end.
“We are ready, prepared and willing to devote all our energies to end this unpalatable spectacle which is most disconcerting to all advocates of accelerated Northern Development.
“We extend our sympathies to the families of the students who perished in the tragedy, and in earlier violence, and pray for peaceful rest of their souls.
“May peace be restored to Bawku and Nalerigu at the earliest opportunity”.
