Kadjebi (O/R), July 16, GNA – Residents of Kadjebi in the Oti Region have welcomed the government’s decision to allocate GH₵25 million for the payment of allowances to assembly members for April and May 2025.
Community members say assembly members dedicate significant time and effort to serving their electoral areas and deserve financial recognition for their work.
Mr. Suleh Braimah, a government teacher at Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School (KASEC), with 20 years of experience, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that assembly members often work behind the scenes to promote development in their communities without much public attention or compensation.
Ms. Victoria Enyonam Klugah, Chairperson of the Kadjebi chapter of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), said the payment was a step in the right direction, acknowledging the hard work of these local leaders.
Former Assemblyman for the Menuso Electoral Area, Mr. Baba Abdul Rahman, who served for 12 years, described the move as timely and motivating. He said that allowances would boost morale and improve performance among assembly members, ultimately leading to better service delivery.
“Incentivizing public service helps ensure that local representatives remain committed and responsive to their communities,” Mr. Rahman added.
A resident farmer of Martin Kordzi, Mr. Lawson Kugblenu, also praised the move, saying it was long overdue. He noted that assembly members often address a wide range of community challenges and deserve compensation for their efforts.
Overall, the sentiments across the district reflect a strong consensus in favor of the government’s initiative. As part of its 2024 electioneering campaign promise, the government released GH₵25 million in allowances to assembly members nationwide. The funds, disbursed on June 18, 2025, were allocated to all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to cover April and May allowances.
At a press briefing on Monday, July 14, Minister for Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, announced that each of the 9,085 assembly members across the country would receive GH₵1,300.00.
He added that while the Ministry of Finance released GH₵25 million, over GH₵23.6 million had already been disbursed to the MMDAs.
