Commercial drivers, residents unhappy about poor lighting system in Sunyani

Sunyani, (Bono), July 23, GNA-Commercial drivers and residents in Sunyani, have called for the fixing of faulty streetlights for improved security in the regional capital.

According to the drivers, the poor lighting system due to non-functioning of many of the streetlights were contributing to crashes and pedestrian knockdowns in the capital.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, the residents noted that the situation was becoming disturbing because the drivers knocked down pedestrians and escaped, instead of helping the victims.

Some of the residents also expressed worry about increasing cases of stealing and petty theft, with criminals attacking people for their mobile phones and personal belongings at night.

Mr Kwaku Agyeman, a driver, urged the city authorities to do something urgently and fix the streetlights, worrying that snatching of mobile phones was also becoming alarming in the capital.

He said: “The attackers often threaten their victims with knives and offensive instruments and snatch their mobile phones and other personal properties.”

Madam Grace Oduro, a resident who was a victim, told the GNA that her attackers took her mobile phone, and urged authorities at the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to improve the lighting system.

She also called on the police to intensify night patrols and help control the emerging crime wave in the capital and other neighbourhoods.

Madam Oduro said she was highly optimistic that with the fixing of additional streetlights and maintenance of current ones, the city authority would create a safer environment for all residents.
