Accra, July 15, GNA-The Black Queens of Ghana have booked a place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking their first appearance since 2016.
Ghana delivered a commanding performance to defeat Tanzania’s Twiga Stars 4-1 at the Berkane Municipal Stadium on Monday.
With elimination looming, the Queens had to rise to the occasion and secure a crucial victory in a must-win clash against their Group C counterparts.
Goals from Princella Adubea, Alice Kusi, Evelyn Badu, and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah propelled the Ghana to an emphatic win, setting up a showdown with Algeria.
Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s tactical approach proved spot-on this time, as the Queens struck early to make a strong statement.
Adubea and Kusi formed a commendable partnership, consistently testing Tanzania’s goalkeeper with series of relentless attempts.
After dominating the game from defense to attack, Ghana momentarily lost their grip late in the first half, allowing the Twiga Stars to level the score.
Tanzania came out in the second half with renewed hunger for goals, while Ghana showed a little urgency in their response.
The West African side regained their momentum in the 63rd minute when Alice Kusi expertly converted a penalty to restore their lead.
Ghana stamped their authority in the game, dictating play and outclassing the Tanzanians in possession.
The campaign was capped off with goals from substitute Badu and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, marking a fresh chapter for the Black Queens.
Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah won the Woman of the Match award following an impressive performance on the day.
In 13 editions of the WAFCON, this is the seventh time the Black Queens have reached the knockout stage and notably, the first time they have scored four goals in a single match since the 1998 tournament.
Ghana will face Algeria in the last eight on July 19 at the Berkane Stadium.
