At least eight dead, 20 missing in Nepal floods

Kathmandu, July 8, (dpa/GNA) – At least eight people have died and 20 others are missing, following severe flooding in the Himalayan state of Nepal, authorities said on Tuesday.

Some victims have only been identified by body parts recovered from the flood zone, according to a police spokesperson in Kathmandu.

The floods destroyed a key bridge in the village of Rasuwagadhi, near the border with China, disrupting a major route between the two countries.

“The bridge connecting the two countries has been washed away,” said an official from Rasuwa district in northern Nepal.

The Bhotekoshi River burst its banks after days of heavy rainfall, part of the annual monsoon season that typically runs from June to September. While the seasonal rains are essential for agriculture in South Asia, they frequently lead to landslides, flooding and severe infrastructure damage.

Emergency response teams are continuing search and recovery efforts in the affected areas.
