Konongo-Odumase (Ash), June 6, GNA – Rev. Dr. Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asante-Akim Central, has launched the “One Child, One Tree” initiative at the Konongo-Odumase Senior High School (KOSS) to promote environmental awareness and sustainability among students.
The initiative, which was launched at the national level by President John Dramani Mahama to mark the 2025 World Environment Day, aims to instill a sense of environmental responsibility in children by encouraging them to plant and nurture trees.
Rev. Dr. Aidoo, speaking at the launch, called on students across the municipality to embrace the initiative as a civic responsibility.
The goal is for each student to plant and care for at least one tree, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability in the municipality.
To motivate participation, the Assembly has announced plans to reward both individual students and schools that achieve high tree survival rates.
The MCE highlighted the critical role trees play in preserving the environment, especially for future generations.
“Trees are more than just part of our landscape. They are the lungs of our earth, providing oxygen, improving air quality, and serving as habitats for various species,” he pointed out.
He described trees as symbols of hope and resilience, noting that they remind us of our ability to overcome adversity and grow stronger as a community.
Rev. Aidoo encouraged the students not only to plant trees on school grounds but also to commit to nurturing them just as they would care for their communities and environment.
“Let’s work together to green our surroundings, practice effective waste management, and support sustainable initiatives,” he urged.
He also emphasised the importance of reducing waste, conserving water bodies, and protecting natural resources.
He raised concerns about the rampant disposal of plastic waste, warning of its harmful effects on the environment, and advised students against indiscriminate littering.
The MCE called on all stakeholders to inspire collective action for environmental protection, stressing that every small effort contributed to a larger impact.
