UN chief calls for restraint after India strikes Pakistan targets

New York, May 7, (dpa/GNA) – UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for restraint after Indian forces struck targets in Pakistan following a deadly militant attack in the disputed Himalayan valley of Kashmir.

“The world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan,” Guterres’s spokesperson said in a note to journalists issued on Tuesday.

On Monday, Guterres had voiced concerns about tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad reaching “their highest in years,” adding that “a military solution is no solution.”

The UN chief on Monday had also condemned a deadly militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22, in which at least 26 civilians were killed.

The Pakistani military early on Wednesday local time said eight people were killed and 33 wounded as India struck targets in Pakistan.
