Bonsa (W/R), May 30, GNA- Tarkwa May Legends, an association of persons born in May and reside in Tarkwa, and its environs has donated medical equipment worth GHÂą45,000 to four Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compounds to improve healthcare services.
The items are made up of autoclave 18 liters with timer, BMI scale with height, baby weighing scale, nebulizer machine, pulse oximeter, digital thermometer, and private screen (four folders).
The beneficiary CHPS compounds are Bonsa, Brahabebome, Akoon and Bonsawire all in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.
Presenting the equipment at the premises of the health facilities, Legend Mrs Mary Addison-Fynn, Chairperson, said during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people felt isolated, and this motivated them to make a positive impact.
She noted that as they shared their idea, more people got involved, and their group took shape in 2021.
“While other groups focused on different areas, we have chosen health because we know that when our community is healthy, everyone benefits, and that is why we are dedicated to healthcare initiatives” the chairperson said
Additionally, Legend Mrs Addison-Fynn announced: “To enhance accessibility, we intend to put up signboards for all the CHIPS compounds in this area because we even struggled before reaching Bonsa CHPS compound.”
âAlso, next year, we are planning to take a significant step by constructing a facility for one of the CHIPS compounds.”
Legend Madam Ivy Ama Arthur, Secretary, explained that the Tarkwa May Legends association is a group of individuals born in May, residing in Tarkwa and its surrounding areas and they meet annually to make donations and support their communities.
She recalled that in 2021 they sponsored an education on neonatal jaundice at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital to empower mothers with knowledge on how to handle such situations.
The following year, the group procured a firefly for the same facility to help address neonatal jaundice in babies brought in from the catchment areas.
Additionally, the secretary said as midwives were celebrated in the month of May, they decided to support these professionals at the Apinto Government Hospital Maternity unit in their third year by making their duties more manageable as they served their families, friends and communities.
“This year, we have brought our efforts directly to the communities because we realised that if they are well resourced, we can prevent unnecessary deaths and improve overall well-being,â Legend Madam Arthur said.
The secretary added that, “The presence of different types of mining in Tarkwa, including illegal mining, brings with it a range of health issues that affect the local population.â
âWe are proud to be making a positive impact, no matter how small, to keep our community safe and healthy,” she said.
Receiving the items, Mrs Wilhemina Tiwaah Duah Morttey, Municipal Director of Health Services, Tarkwa Nsuaem, who was excited about the presentation, commended the donors for assistance.
She said: “An autoclave and weighing scales for both adults and infants will greatly enhance our healthcare services. In emergency situations like asthma attracts, the nebulizer you have donated will enable us to provide critical care and stabilize the patient.â
Mrs Morttey assured them that the equipment would be properly maintained and that it would also be put to good use to improve health outcomes for residents in the four communities and beyond.
