Qatar says Gaza ceasefire talks stalled by ‘fundamental’ differences

Cairo, May 20, (dpa/GNA) – The Gaza ceasefire negotiations in Qatar are stalled due to “fundamental” differences between the sides, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said on Tuesday.

“The rounds of negotiations that took place in Doha in the past couple of weeks, unfortunately did not lead us anywhere yet because there is a fundamental gap between the two parties,” he told an economic forum in the Qatari capital.

Last week, a team of Israeli negotiators landed in Doha.

Qatar has previously brokered indirect talks between Israel and Hamas, along with the United States and Egypt, though there has been no progress for months now.

One party is looking for a partial deal, while the other is looking to end the war, Mohammed said, adding: “We couldn’t bridge this fundamental gap with whatever proposals we provided.”

He also said Israel’s latest intensification of it military campaign in Gaza will “postpone the diplomatic conclusion of the war, which will end only diplomatically from our point of view, and will just cost us a death toll on the Palestinian side and also on the hostages side.”
