Bia East (WN/R), May 30, GNA — The ComCA-Ghana in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has sensitised ten communities in the Bia East and Juaboso Districts of the Western North Region on fundamental rights at the workplace.
The five-day event engaged over 1,286 pupils and 830 members from the participating communities.
Mr Emmanuel Addowah, the Executive Director for ComCA- Ghana, said the engagement, under the ACCEL African Projects II, focused on educating the community members on the fundamental principles and rights at work including ending child labour.
He said the event focused on five major rights including freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, elimination of forced or compulsory labour, abolishing child labour, elimination of discrimination, and occupational safety and health.
He stated that the sensitisation used creative performances from the pupils, who used drama and poetry that displayed traditional dance and choreography to convey messages about child protection, workplace rights, and the consequences of child labour.
“These youth-led artistic expressions proved highly impactful, drawing emotional responses and speaking open dialogue among parents, traditional authorities, and stakeholders respectfully,” Mr Addowah added.
Mr Anikla Rafui, the Bia East Social Welfare Officer, said the initiative would help eliminate the issue of force and child labour in cocoa growing and small-scale mining areas in the district.
Mr Lawrence Amofa, the Social Welfare Officer for Juaboso, also appealed to the District Assembly, traditional leaders, and the media to implement pragmatic measures in creating awareness on child rights to help curb child labour in the area.
