Takoradi, April 29, GNA- The Western Regional Rent Control Department, has declared its intention to embark on Rental Housing Reforms in the Western Region to help manage and curb rental issues in the Region.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Courage Cornelius Sonu, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Rent Control, said the Reform sought to address rent and housing related issues in the Region through outlined policy frameworks.
He said the people of Sekondi-Takoradi had experienced and continued to endure certain unfavourable yet persistent happenings within the rental housing sector, which needed to be addressed holistically for the betterment of rental occupation and effectiveness of rent regime in the Region.
He noted that the Department had held community engagements with the Landlords and Tenants Association to sensitize them on rental laws and how best they could embark on the Reforms.
Mr Sonu, said a proposal had been sent to the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC), for approval with the necessary guidelines and framework outlined in the proposal for consideration to help reform the rent regime in the Western Region.
“The Western Regional Coordinating Council oversees the Region therefore the need to appeal to them with other relevant stakeholders to help push this agenda for a better and conducive rental housing in the Region.
He mentioned that once the Department got the approval from the WRCC, it would mobilize all stakeholders for an engagement for a policy framework in the Region.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer said extensive research was conducted to have a proper roadmap for rental housing to be properly streamlined in the Region with the help of the police, landlords, municipal and district assemblies among other stakeholders.
He encouraged all to embrace the Rental Policy Reforms as housing was one of the necessities of life.
He also explained that the Department had gone digital, therefore landlords and tenants could channel their cases using the website www.rent control.mwh.gov.gh in the comfort of their homes.
