Accra, April 25, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Police Command is investigating a shooting incident at Nyinahin that left one person dead and three injured, a police statement said.

Preliminary reports indicate that on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at about 1100 hours, a group of youth from Nyinahin were heading to the cemetery along the Kumasi-Bibiani Highway to bury a friend.

A military truck stopped after spotting one mourner in military camouflage.

“Eyewitnesses say the military personnel approached the mourner and attempted to forcibly remove the uniform when a confrontation ensued, during which a soldier allegedly shot the mourner in the head, resulting in his death.

“The deceased has been identified as Akwasi Lala, also known as Kushivi,” the statement noted.

The incident escalated, and in an attempt to prevent retaliation, the military personnel reportedly fired gunshots, injuring three other mourners.

A police investigative team retrieved spent shell casings from the scene as part of ongoing forensic investigations.

Lala’s body has been deposited at the Nyinahin Community Mortuary for autopsy.

The statement said the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, has since visited the crime scene and the victims at the hospital, where the injured are responding to treatment.

The Regional Commander assured the community of a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.

Police Command is liaising with the Central Military Command to secure the release of the military personnel involved for questioning.

The Command urged the public to remain calm and cooperate fully with the investigation to ensure justice is served.
