Glaucoma Day: Dr Awuku urges public to check their sight

Abesim (Bono), March 14, GNA – Dr Adwoa Awuku, an eyecare specialist in-charge of the Abesim Eye Clinic in the Sunyani Municipality, has warned that about 95 per cent of glaucoma and related eye diseases have no symptoms.

He urged the public to go for checks to know about their eye health condition. He said as the world marked the World Glaucoma Day (WGD), free eye screening exercises were being conducted at various eye facilities and urged the public to capitalise on that to undergo eye tests.

Celebrated annually between March 09 and March 15, the WGD seeks to promote good eye condition and sight, and the 2025 celebration is on the theme: “Green Vision for a Brighter Tomorrow”.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), near Sunyani, Dr Awuku said glaucoma had been identified as the second leading cause of preventable blindness, and saying “glaucoma is irreversible,” however it could be managed to prevent further damage to the optic nerves.

She said early detection was essential for treating glaucoma which might involve surgery, and indicated that the disease was hereditary, hence the need to intensify awareness creation on the disease for people to check and know their eye condition.

Dr Awuku cautioned the public against self-medication and unauthorised use of eye drops in managing eye related diseases, saying that could worsen glaucoma and lead to further complications.
