Ho (V/R), Feb. 7, GNA – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has strongly called on the NPP minority to stay out of the affairs of the newly appointed Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiamah, who the party asserts is well-equipped to restore financial stability in the country.
In a press statement issued on Friday, February 7, and signed by Regional Communication Officer Mr. Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, the Volta NDC decried what it described as the NPP’s “desperate political witch-hunt” against Dr. Asiamah.
According to the statement, for the past seven years, the NPP relentlessly pursued a baseless agenda against him simply because he defended the Bank of Ghana’s board-approved decision to provide liquidity support to several banks.
The NDC criticized the NPP minority’s recent request to the President to drop Dr. Asiamah over his credibility.
The party maintained that the NPP-led government deliberately subjected Dr. Asiamah to a prolonged legal ordeal that curtailed his freedom and imposed significant financial burdens, all without producing any evidence of a violation of the Bank of Ghana Act or demonstrating that he had caused any financial loss to the state.
“We in the Volta Region view the charges brought against Dr. Asiamah by the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government as malicious and politically motivated,” the statement read.
“The decision to provide liquidity support was not unprecedented, as similar actions were taken by past governors. Why then, was Dr. Asiamah singled out?”
The statement went on to affirm that Dr. Asiamah’s innocence had now been vindicated and that he was targeted solely for defending sound, legitimate financial decisions made under the previous NDC government.
The Volta NDC warned that the days of using Voltarians as scapegoats for political gain were over, declaring that the region would no longer tolerate such injustices.
Furthermore, the statement alluded to concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest by noting that Dr. Gideon Boako’s wife is employed at the Bank of Ghana, a situation that, according to the NDC, explains his reluctance to confront these issues.
The party contrasted this with its own commitment to moral values and principled governance, rejecting any form of political persecution.
The Volta NDC urged Dr. Johnson Asiamah to remain focused on his new responsibilities, cautioning him against being distracted by the unfounded criticisms of the opposition’s micro-minority, a group the NDC claims was responsible for plunging Ghana’s economy into instability during their tenure.
The party expressed confidence that the people of the Volta Region, along with all well-meaning Ghanaians, stand firmly behind Dr. Asiamah, and that his leadership would deliver the financial stability the nation desperately needs.
Dr. Johnson Asiamah was nominated by the President on Friday, January 31, following a formal request and acceptance from the outgoing Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, who is set to retire in March.
