Asato-Menuso (O/R), Feb. 14, GNA – Residents of Asato-Menuso in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region have appealed to the Kadjebi District Assembly, Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) and philanthropists to support them with safe, accessible and potable mechanised water system for domestic use.
They said this would help prevent a possible outbreak of water borne diseases in the area, as the scattered farming community with a population of over 2,000 inhabitants, currently depended on the river Wawa and other streams for domestic use.
Mr Cephas Ababio, an Opinion Leader of the community, who led the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to one of the water sources, said the situation was also affecting the school attendance of pupils and their academic performance, as they had to trek many miles to fetch water for bathing before going to school.
Mr Ababio said though they had been using these water sources for ages now, they might not be as safe as before due to the increased negative human activities like indiscriminate use of agrochemicals and illegal logging leading to their pollution.
He said, “it was based on this that we are calling for mechanised water systems to save us from infections,” he said.
Madam Patience Ababio, a 65-year-old resident, also reiterated the need for safe water as health implications of the absence of water in the area could not be underestimated as in recent times residents developed rashes after using the water unboil.
She appealed to benevolent organisations and NGOs to come to their aid by providing them with a mechanised water system.
