Woe (VR), Jan. 24, GNA – Anlo Youth Council (AYC), the umbrella body of the youth of Anlo has welcomed commitment by Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister-designate, to tackle the perennial tidal waves menace along the region’s coastline.
Some communities in the region’s three coastal districts of Anloga, Keta and Ketu South had been reeling under the devastating effects of the recurring menace, resulting in countless calls for government’s intervention to stop the sea erosion and save the coastline from going extinct.
Mr Gunu during his vetting said, “Under my tenure, I will work with other sector ministries and agencies to tackle the tidal waves menace in the Volta Region to protect the coastal belt.”
Speaking in an interview with Ghana News Agency, Mr Kenneth Kpedor, President, AYC said the Minister-designate’s promise was in the right direction.
He called for immediate and sustainable action to address the menace which continued to cause untold hardships to residents saying, “this cannot be another unfulfilled political promise.”
“The AYC welcomes the commitment by Mr James Gunu, the Minister-designate for the Volta Region, to collaborate with sector ministries and agencies to tackle the perennial tidal waves menace along the Anlo coastline and other affected areas in the region.”
The tidal waves have caused untold destruction to livelihoods, homes, schools, farmlands and critical infrastructure, leaving many residents in a state of despair.
It said “While this commitment is a step in the right direction, we urge the incoming Minister to prioritise this issue as a matter of urgency and work with speed to implement long-term solutions.
Mr Kpedor urged stakeholders including the international community to help protect the Volta Coastline, pledging the readiness of the AYC to support initiatives to ensure the preservation of the region’s rich coastal ecosystem.
“The AYC stands ready to support initiatives aimed at protecting the Anlo coastline and the livelihoods of our people. We call on all stakeholders-government, traditional leaders, civil society, and the international community to come together to address this pressing issue comprehensively,” he said.
